Basic Baby Shoe Sole Tutorial

Hey guys, I've got a tutorial for you today! Baby booties are one of my favorite things to make. They work up pretty quickly, and the end result is both adorable and rewarding. When I first started making booties, one giant source of frustration was the sole.

There are a ton of sole patterns out there, but if you want a universal one, it usually comes in the form of a diagram, like this one:

Wut.

Some people work really well with diagrams. I do not. I much prefer a written pattern. So after some trial and error and some research, I came up with my very own basic baby shoe sole pattern. I use it to make all of my baby booties and shoes. It yields a nice shaped sole with a wider toe than heel (none of that weird oval shape), and it can easily be adjusted by adding or removing some stitches from the foundation chain (with a bit of ingenuity in the sides). This pattern uses standard US crochet abbreviations.

Materials:
Any worsted weight yarn.
Size G/6 4.25mm hook

Ch 11.

Round 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Hdc in next 7 sts. 6 hdc in last st. Now working on other side of chain: hdc in next 7 sts. 5 hdc in last st. Sl st to 1st hdc to join. Ch 1.

Round 2: Sc in first 8 sts. 2 hdc in next 6 sts. Sc in next 12 sts. Sl st to join. Ch 2.

Round 3: Hdc in first 8 sts. *2hdc in first st, 1hdc in next st* repeat from * to * 5 more times. Hdc in next 13 sts. Sl st to join. Ch 1.

Round 4: Sc in back loops only all the way around. Sl st to join. (This makes the first row of the side of the shoe.)

And you're done! Measures approximately 4" long. Now use whatever pattern or ingenious design you have to make an adorable pair of booties.

Let's put cute handmade booties on babies everywhere! Who's with me? (Also, please don't judge my cuticles. It's a struggle.)

Show me some lovin'

Do you use Bloglovin? I recently discovered it. It puts all my favorite blogs in one place. Kind of like a tumblr dashboard for all blogs. I signed up and registered SPC, so you can follow me there if you would like!

Crocodile Stitch Tutorial

Hey all! So if you're up to date with baby bootie trends (yes, they have trends), you'll know that crocodile stitch baby booties are hot for tots right now. Most of ones I've seen look like this:

(You can buy the pattern for these exact booties in this Etsy store.)

But I'm more of a DIY kind of girl, and I'm trying to rely less on patterns and more on my own abilities, so I just learned how to do the crocodile stitch. I found the most helpful tutorial on YouTube. It's a picture tutorial, which I find a lot easier to follow than the videos.

After that, I used a basic bootie pattern and added in the crocodile stitch and came up with these beauties!

They're different and unique, and I think they're just adorable. The "scales" are bigger than most I've seen, but I like that about it. I might try a different technique next time to make some smaller ones, but I am so, so pleased with how they turned out.

One of the great things about crochet is that anyone can do it and there are so many wonderful resources on the Internet to help you teach yourself. So go explore the Internet and learn something new. In the meantime, happy hooking, y'all!
